Process: Training for the 50 mile ride

As the official rider for The Art Institute of Portland, I’ve had a hard few weeks of training, with more ahead of me. I’m up to riding about 150 miles a week on my fixed gear bicycle. I also plan on taking a few 50 mile rides before the final race day on my bike. If time is willing I’d love to take Sweet Action on a couple extended rides around town. I recently found a new 23 mile route that’s takes me from North Portland to Sellwood and back. I have no gym membership but I have been working out at home everyday for about 45mins. Not to mention my new diet and mental training. I sure long for a nice misty day to take a Century on, which is 100 mile ride.

Progress - a little bit about Sweet Action

First of all, I just wanted to say thank you for checking out our blog. We’re the student team from The Art Institute of Portland who are competing in the Oregon Manifest Bike Constructor’s Challenge.

We only have ten weeks to design/create/and source an entire utility bike.

However, we’re moving along in that process. Our goal is to create a utility bike that’s not for the super hardcore user - but for the average user who would use it to commute to work, grocery shopping, or even to a picnic.

Our bike is about finding those commonly unused spaces in a frame and making them functional. We like compartments. We like getting people into action - sweet action, if you will.

So keep checking back to see what we’re up to - and see us race our finished bike on September 23rd in the Oregon Manifest.

Sean Light is a sophomore in the Industrial Design program at Ai. He works at 21st Avenue Bikes and has been a great resource during our design process. So, let’s get to know him real quick.

Dream Job: It’s actually more a scenario. “W+K would come and pull me out of class and whisk me away to be a creative director. Or, I’d be hand-crafting men’s leather shoes. Either way.”

Place of Origin: Oregon

A little known fact: Combs his hair in the shower - a sign of a true multitasker.

Favorite cereal: Granola. Or fruit.

Introducing: Grady Lamon. The tallest of us all.

Grady is a senior Industrial Designer. He’s 6’7”. Which is pretty tall. Here’s a brief introduction to our tallest member.

Dream job: A professional critic - will you survive his high standards?

A little known fact: His foot is actually a foot long - which he says comes in handy when he’s measuring a room (which happens often).

His favorite cereal: Anything without milk. Maybe oatmeal. But, he says he’s usually eating eggs if anything.
